anyone have any comments on this?
anyone doing anything to fight this?
discuss..
Yes Steve, you will be affected.
Do you think FTP will remain open for business if the US gov't bans online poker and gambling? Probably not. Most of thier customers, and virtually all of the pros live in the US.
The ban will not stop me from playing online poker, but it will decrease the amount of fun I have doing it. I've played many sites, including a few European sites, and most of them suck.
I joined the PPA even though I'm Canadian. Most everything that happens in the US effects us.
The bill doesn't actually prohibit online gambling, nor does it make it a criminal offence for somebody to gamble online. It's more about preventing financial transactions to and from online gambling sites, and preventing links to online gambling sites.
The bill is basically a complete joke. It has so many carve-outs for things like horse racing and state lotteries that it effectively contradicts itself. Playing the lottery is okay, but playing a game with a large skill element like poker isn't?
Whats more, it is unlikely to pass the senate anyway (similar bills have been defeated numerous times in the past) and if it doesn't do so soon, they'll have to go back to the beginning and start all over again.
Nevertheless you should take this bill seriously, whether you live in the US or not. The puritan minority in the US, with their twisted sense of morality, has a significant voice - as you can see simply by watching American TV. There is a chance, however small, that the bill will pass, and that will have a substantial effect on the poker industry.
The bigger sites will find a way around the law - Full Tilt, PokerStars, PartyGaming etc. are simply too big to be destroyed by this. But the smaller sites will definitely suffer, and the player pool will dwindle as people find it more and more difficult to deposit online.
There's a couple of great articles about this by Allyn Jaffrey Shulman on the CardPlayer website:
The Senate must first vote on it, and then it will become official if they pass it too.
(If you play for money online this bill might affect you indirectly. You will lose a lot of profitable American fish)
Wouldn't this just stop people from putting money online using credit cards? What about Neteller? I don't use a credit card for that...=
I don't understand how this should affect poker at all. The U.S. Gov't already acknowledged poker as a source of income, a game of skill. There was a court case in I think 1989 maybe? I don't see why a gambling act should even affect poker if poker isn't necessarily gambling. In my pov, poker isn't gambling, it's more skill than luck. Just my 2 cents.
Peace!
oh **** I thaught they were voting on not letting US citisens use credit cards for online gambling not take it out of the states for good
We are well aware of this.
Poker is without a doubt both a luck AND skill game. So yes, in some ways its gambling, because it's not ALL skill. Is it mostly skill in the long run? Yes. In the short run, however, luck plays a huge role. Hence, you can't really classify it neatly into either category.
i was never trying to say that poker doesn't take skill, if i thought it was a luck game, i probably wouldnt be playing it, posting at this forum, or thinking about buying a book. i was just saying that in society, poker will be considered gambling.
For anyone who got blind-sided by the premature ousting of US poker players and have winnings due:
I got mine tranferred out. Send an email to with your real name, USPS address, phone, player name and your NETELLER account number and email address. (Email addies at both companies need to match.) It may take a week or more to process the payout, but at least you'll have the bucks you earned. They were nice about it. I sent a thank you after I verified the tranfer and got a smiley face back.
I can't imagine it, but if you don't have a NETELLER account, you're out of luck. Open one.
Good luck!
how do yout get that out of what i said? all i was saying is that poker will always be considered gambling, thats why there is a whole forum section here called bad beats and poker frustrations
Bad example. There are books around on beating the lottery, keno, and other games of pure chance that cannot be beaten. For example: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&isbn=1580420710&itm=6
Of course these books focus on hoeky ideas that violate all sorts of probability theory, so they aren't in the same league with poker books.
Then obviously you have never bluffed someone out of a better hand or stolen blinds.
Don't you understand, the internet...is like, it's like a series of tubes. Having to send poker cards through them slows down precious email. 8)
Like many people have said it sounds like the bill will not pass, but they might crack down on internet gambling under the current laws. I didn't know a site was closed it's US accounts becuase of it though, does anyone have any more info on it, and what is the likelyhood of the same fate for full tilt?
IMO, poker is not gambling, but a skill game. I take pride in what I do. Why would people write books on a game that is 80% luck? Do you see books on how to win the state lottery? So poker has to be much more skill than luck. Yeah, you can say it's luck that you get better cards, but that doesn't mean anything. It's all about how you play the cards you get, etc. Plus the fact that the gov't recognized poker as a profession rather than a game of luck has to say something. I just wish I can remember where I read that at. I'll find it soon.
Peace!
OPDS.... i don't think u understand. he told us (maybe even demanded)2 discuss. I don't think 1 sentence is what he had in mind. damn it DISCUSS!!!!!!!!
im not affected by this but when will it come into effect
And every poker site would make you a billionaire, so if that is not a gain.....
You're an idiot stating this.
That's the point I was aiming for griffin...I thought it was implied. But good lookout.
Understandable jdub. I dislike it so much that poker is looked upon as gambling in the masses of society. If only they could see how much courage it takes to make a huge bluff in a cash game or outplay your opponent heads up, etc.
LMAO that was a joke.
bottom line the idiot is the person that lives in Washington signs up for this site and does hard time as a convicted felon for playing 50 cents worth of penny ante poker.
these guys are shooting off their moths on national tv CNN daring the govt to make it legal OR ELSE and i say that was a stupid move!
and someone should let them know...
Howard that was a stupid move.
POKERSCOOBY
Not sure how much truth there is to this article, but apparently there seems to be a lack of support for the bill in the senate and is running into opposition from lobbyists and some Senators have put a hold on the bill.
Here's the article:

poker is still gambling, you are betting money on your cards, the matter of luck or skill has nothing to do with it being gambling. i dont think its gonna pass through the senate though.
