Has anyone else out there read this book? What did you think? I realize that the all-in move is very powerful AGAINST PLAYERS WHO RECOGNIZE IT, but against your little donkeys, I don't think its going to work. I've had success with the strategy presented in the book, but only at the late stages of online SnGs.
Also, I wonder about maximizing your profits using this technique. If you go all-in preflop, as the book suggests, and everyone folds, you just win the blinds. Wouldn't it be better to raise a significant amount, get one or two callers, and play out the hand?
I'm not too sure of this technique. Comments?
Maria,
There is a forum on LVA about kill phil and the authors routinely post there. I think the short url is http://www.killphilpoker.com
The book was written to get newbies up to speed. In general the difference between a good player and a great player is post flop. Take that advantage away and your a little closer to being competitive.
A good mix of small ball early, and long ball when the blinds and ante's are worth fighting for has been very effective for alot of people.
That example is from Sklansky's Tournament Poker book for Advanced Players.
I recently played in the Tunica $10k main event after winning my seat via the Winner's Choice promotion. When I saw David Singer, Alan Goehring, Josh Arieh, and Daniel Negreneau sit down at my table, you can bet your last dollar I seriously considered adopting that strategy.....
Thankfully I didn't, and doubled my chip stack on Josh and Daniel in one big pot.....
At several points in the book, Phil makes it clear that that every game, every table, and every player is different. You have to be able to adapt your strategy to current playing conditions, the size of your chip stack, how close you are to the bubble, etc. There is no 'universal' strategy to poker. That being said, after reading Little Green I went to a sit n' go night at a local card room and was able to play in four games. I took a first and second place using many facets of, but not all, of Phil's advice. Minus a few bad beats, I would have placed in every game I played.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...
These are exactly the guys I WOULD use it against. They understand the power of the all-in bet. It's the cheese-balls I worry about.
