For the longest time i used the pot button almost exclusively. it was easy, it always gave people 2 to 1 odds which is not good enough for any draw. of course when i had the hand and got payed it was huge, but when i lost it was also huge.

i learned that a 3/4 pot bet works just as well with less variance. now i mix up my bets. anywhere between 3/5 of the pot or even a little large than the pot when i feel it is necessary.

I'm still learning but slowly since i cant study the game the way i would like and i dont play as much as i used to.

I actually had a double cash that night. I finished in the Top 100 somewhere in the A event...my Aces got cracked by K-10s to send my stack tumbling down and my event ended about five minutes later.

    Agreed IABoomer,

Many more pots should be won before the river and with smaller pots. When too many people see the river with too many chips , there are more suckouts and the suckouts tend to knock someone out.

Also, I think the call that started this thread is fine. It is risky, but if you have a read you have to go with your gut. I don't think the opponent would have played AA or even AJ like that, so it was a reasonable chance it was a bluff.

  6.

Well, you put him on a bluff. So you did good.. lol. Very nice call. Did anybody win double-final table lastnight? If anybody can check the jackpot for tonight that would be greatly appreciated. I am at work and you cannot check it unless you go straight through the TILT software.

how did you do in that tournament anyway?

  8.

i'm pretty sure you do.. i just double-checked again. you can see that the daily double is listed there but its not clickable.. check it out. its only available through the my promotions page on the client. anyways, i'll be home in a couple hours and see how it went lastnight.

2 high - do you play in these a lot? i've only double-cashed a few times but i love the idea of this tournament. are you playing tonight?

Hello there...I'm the guy he's talking about here.

I'm an aggressive player and make no apologies for it. The thing is there ARE plenty of players here who are idiots, but since this hand occured I have made a key adjustment in my game. I don't fire two or three bullets at a pot anymore in a situation like this anymore on nothing because of the precise reason noted in the thread...people like to put people on bluffs and will call bets with ANYTHING. When faced with many people like this bluffing becomes a fool's game.

Since this time my bankroll has nearly tripled with that adjustment alone. I give 2hc credit for actually thinking through this...most people don't and they call simply because they ASSUME for no reason that someone is bluffing.

Also, I no longer use the Pot button. The sliding arrow scale below the bet number is my new best friend. Really allows good variance on bet sizes without having to type in a number.

  10.

2 high, can you check the jackpot for me?? lol. What did best double-finish pay lastnight? 8)

dont have to use the client, its linked in the promo section of the FT site.

I find that right now if you only bet 1/3 to 1/2 of the pot on the flop, most players will give you very little credit and will call with almost anything. Of course a legitimate drawing hand is going to call, but if it's obvious, like a flush draw, you can get away, if you need to, cheeply with a smaller bet and they will not very often reraise, since they are getting priced in.

If you bet the pot they will reraise more often in what I suspect is a way to lock themselves into a hand and get paid off when a big draw hits.

But it's the other hands that I want calling when I flop a big to monster hand... the players who habitually call with any Ace (as an overcard to the flop) or if they hit bottom pair...a draw to a worse flush

I take down a fair amount of pots when I make "scared" looking bets on the flop with stuff like top pair & nut flush draw, 2 pair, a set, even flopped straights.

Of course if the board gets scary on the turn, possibly giving someone a draw for the river, then you have to either turn up the heat with a big bet or slowplay and see if they miss on the river and hopefully induce a bluff. Sometimes that will backfire, but if they have little chance of hitting or they are prone to bluff, it's usually worth the attempt.

The other thing that helps you is if you end up showing down that monster, it will make it easier to steal or semi-steal when you make smaller bets later. Although they'll think you only make pot sized bets when you're stealing, so you best have a big hand next time you apply a lot of heat.

last night was my first time, i was bored and had the points so i played a satellite.

i plan on playing maximum 2 satellites a night to get into A then selling shares for B as long as people are interested.

    thats the plan.

Yeah, it has the feel of flopping a draw, betting in position in order to buy a free card, then firing on the river having missed. I wonder if in the future you'd be better served by firing something around a 1/2 pot bet on the river as a value/blocking bet. If he decides to shove the river, however misguided that might be, you're in a bad position. Your lead at the river may cause him to put the brakes on and not make a bet you can't call, thus costing you this pot.

    [somewhat off-topic rant]

This is the thing that gets me about playing here, and it seems to be endemic to this site. Here's a guy who fires two pot-sized bets. The first is a semi-bluff on the flop. The second is a stone cold bluff on the river. I'm guessing the "Bet Pot" button is probably the most clicked thing in this guy's arsenal. However, with everyone firing pot-sized bets with gutshots, middle pair, or the nuts, it's pretty difficult to play smallball poker and chip away at people.

Perhaps this big pot style that seems to permeate here is what leads to higher variance, and thus more whining by "rigged" theorists, since the swings are going to be much greater?
