Somebody talk to me about losing streaks! I'm in the middle of one and it
seems like it will never end. Been playing 6mos. and think I did my homework! Playing 3/6 &5/10 limit holdem!
Thanks
Thanks for your replies. I started with 5k.,and won early but have been losing since. I guess the question is how do you know it's a normal losing streak or I am just not any good! Mostly , not making flops or bad beats on river, like A high flush losing to QQQQ! ETC.
A long time ago, I heard that at a casino, when some one is winning the house will change dealers... decks or what ever to change the streak. I didn't put a lot of thought into that until I started playing poker on a regular basis. Now, if I am losing.. I change games (from the $5/10 to $20 SNG or to $4 SNG or $26 NL Tourn, etc). THat seems to help and I thing it might be because I take a different approach to a different game.
Another thing that has helped me is to critique myself. When I have been loseing, I wll sit down with a yellow pad by the computer. At the top of the page I put the buy in, the game and the time started. As I play and I make a mistake... I write that down, the time, what I did wrong and how much that cost me. Every hour I put a line in about how much I am losing or wining. As time goes along, I reread it. That tends to fill a hole or two in my game and at least slow down the losing. It also helps me stay off tilt.
A lot of players think every time they lose it is bad luck. I tend to think my playing might have something to do with it.

Everyone goes through losing streaks. I personally play at 3 different Online sites. When I'm losing at one I will try another. If ring games are not working for me I go to tourneys. Usually something works. And if it doesn't, well then I play golf on the computer. GL
i play 3/6 limit at my local casino, and usually buy in with $120, and when i started out i lost it all in one session. luckily i haven't had that happen again, and the most i have taken away from the table is about $200 on top of buy in.
i hope you are talking about B&M because there are much lower limits on line, if your casino doesn't offer lower limits than 3/6, as others said, just make sure you are not sitting down at wrong times. My local casino is 1 1/2 hrs away from home, so when i find myself on the verge of tilt after a bad streak instead of splitting completely i just take a walk, take a long lunch break, hit the blackjack table, something to just get my mind off poker completely for a little while, this really seems to help reset my mindset.

You are asking a pretty hard question for anyone to answer even about themselves. Something I will recommend right away is to use some sort of tracking software so you can find your leaks and plug them and keep tabs on the opponents you most frequently go up against. Another great thing is to find out if you are neting big bets an hour and at what times and limits your peaks and valleys come at.
In the graph above you can see a normal winning player with 1 BB an hour and a std deviation of 10BB an hour over 1000 hours, thats about the right amount of time for a part time online player over 6 months. Do you see the swings involved there? If you were a break even player you can imagine how scary it can get just to go nowhere. I like that you started with 5,000. That is definately enough to handle the swings unless you are a) a losing player or, b) unusally high variance player. Ive had a friend that had over 30BB an hour std dev but was a long term winner, he eventually quit because it drove him nuts going up and down up and down sometimes 400BB in a short time either way. Anyway, get pokertracker and see if anything is out of the ordinary in your game.
Well for starters try moving down in limits. Also make sure that you're at your best when you sit down to play - well rested, not hungry, not stressed out, etc. Beyond that, just ride it out and don't let it tilt you. We all go through losing streaks, the key is to minimize your losses. Keeping control of your bankroll and your emotions is very important.
What did you start your bankroll at for these limits?Last edited by deadmoney314 on Tue Oct 25, 2005 4:30 pm; edited 1 time in total
u should either move down limits or try play chip for a little bit. could work.
I like to sit with $150 in 3/6. I find that that gives me enough leeway to recover from a few bad hands without putting too much of my bankroll at risk.
Deadmoney;
Thanks so much for your reply, I will take your advice. Question,in a 3/6
limit game, how much would you buy in for, and be willing to lose in one session?
Thanks
Rich
Not me. I even suck at computer golf. I just start wishing I had never stopped playing poker. LOL
When I play 3/6 live I will usually play with $100. That may seem high or low to some people but that just happens to work for me. If you are a little bit looser and tend to give up a few pots at the beginning, then maybe more like $ 150 would be better for you. Remeber in a 3/6 game you need $72 to be able to cap every round. Don't let your stack determine how much you can win in one pot.
