How do I play Razz? Pretty poorly.

I messed around with it a little bit at Full Tilt, but didn't really care for it.

Give me my Stud/8 and I'm happy.

Q: How do I play Razz?

    A: Poorly.

  4.

Can someone explain to me rules.... I'd love to try my hand at a new game. The swing of no limit are killing me. Thanks!

  5.

you basically try and make A-2-3-4-5 in razz... doesnt matter what suit they are, that is the pure nuts...

8-7-6-5-4 beats 10-4-3-2-A because you start counting from the highest card w/ a made hand, not the lowest... sort of like the kicker, but opposite idea (lowest wins, not highest)

With a deck of cards and other players.

Sorry I couldnt resist saying this.

  6.

The simplest definition is that it is seven card stud played for low.

    Rules can be found at

  7.

    you said;

(6-A)-5-A-6-5 (I check, my opponent checks)

(6-A)-5-A-6-5-(5) (I check, my opponent checks)

    Your hand is actually 6-6-5-5-5-A and that's VERY bad for Razz. You don't want pairs or trips. You need low cards without matching;

6-4-3-2-A would be a winner. (of course, the NUT is 5-4-3-2-A)

I had a starting hand of 3-2-A and then drew another A, then 2, then 3

that's nothing. Just a series of pairs that can't win.

I love Razz, but even a great starting hand can quickly go sour.

    Pairs are bad.

    OK. Her pair is nice

Think of poker hands in reverse, you try to make your worst hand, two-pair beats a full house, lowest high card (or kicker) wins, etc.

So with 2-5-2-T-A-7-T, you would play T-6-5-2-A to make a ten high. Some hands can't help but make a pair like 3-7-8-7-8-Q-3. You hand would be 3-3-Q-8-7 (Notice I used my lowest pair).

I have seen a pair only win once (3 pair against quads). Needless to say it was a very small pot.

    Razz Hand Reading 101

    Aces are low

You want to use as many different ranks as possible (straights and flushes don't hurt you). On most hands there are at least 5 different ranks so you'd pick the 5 lowest.

In this case there are 3 ranks so my hand will have 9-7-A

Clearly I would prefer 2 pair to 3 of a kind. The obvious answer is to use my 2 bottom pair (7s and As). But is it possible to make a hand with only one pair? Using the pigeonhole principle, the answer is no.

Therefore your Razz hand would be 9-7-7-A-A (2 pair)

    Will it win? No!

To find the best five card razz hand from a seven card combination, there's a straightforward method to do it. You arrange the cards like this:

    - (first cards of each rank, from low to high)

    - (second cards of each rank, from low to high)

    - (third cards of each rank, from low to high)

    - (fourth cards of each rank, from low to high)

Then take the first 5 cards from this list in order.

So for the first hand you gave:

    - A 2 5 6 Q K

    - 6

Giving a Razz hand of A-2-5-6-Q.

And for the second hand you gave:

    - A 2 7 9 J K

    - 9

Giving a Razz hand of A-2-7-9-J.

So the second hand wins, because a Jack high beats a Queen high.

The worst hand in Razz is either KKKQQQQ or KKKKQQQ, which gives:

    - Q K

    - Q K

    - Q K

    - Q or K (doesn't matter)

Giving the absolute worst possible Razz hand of Q-K-Q-K-Q, a full house of Queens full of Kings. In real life, you'll never ever see this hand happen, because the player would have folded a long time ago.

I did go to showdown recently with a hand of two pair, but only because there was no betting beyond 4th street. It went something like this for me:

    (6-A)-5 (I bet, I'm called)

    (6-A)-5-A (I bet, I'm called)

(6-A)-5-A-6 (I check, my opponent checks)

(6-A)-5-A-6-5 (I check, my opponent checks)

(6-A)-5-A-6-5-(5) (I check, my opponent checks)

So I ended up with a hand like this:

    - A 5 6

    - A 5 6

    - 5

For a final hand of A-5-6-A-5, two pair, Fives over Aces. And yes, I lost.

the lowest card does not win its the best 5 low cards out of the 7 you get delt. So A 4 5 6 7 is beaten by 2 3 4 5 6 as the 6 is lower than the 7.

In tied hands like 2 3 4 6 7 vs 2 3 4 5 7 they both have a 7 low the 2nd hand wins as the next card down from the 7 is lower.Last edited by Joe_King on Mon Jul 10, 2006 4:09 am; edited 1 time in total

I agree, razz is picking up. I hope it gets huge(which i doubt), cause it might start showing in more casinos. Say HELL YEAH if you like Razz!

  8.

someone said its like stud low, but there is a difference. All cards count in razz where as in a hi/lo game only A-8 count.

Actually, if you have AA77799, your best 5-card Razz hand would be 77AA9, sevens and Aces -- Aces always play low in Razz.

And what would that beat? Well, since you have three of the four sevens, nobody else can have a pair of 7s, so your second pair and your kicker won't come into play. The worst hand that beats you is 6655K, and the best hand that you can beat is 88AA2.

7 card stud type game, you have to make the lowest hand. Straights and flushes do not count against you. High card showing brings in the bet.

A,2,3,4,5 is best. 7,6,5,4,3, is beat by 7,6,5,4,2, etc.

Razz is picking up, I have saw Chris Ferguson playing several times lately.

i tried this game once i figured since i can't win at holdem because i always have the worst hand and that is the point of razz that i would be good at it. well guess what it did not work and i always have the best hand. i found out that i suck at trying to have the best hand and i suck at trying to have the worst hand. so the equation is supfool123 + best hand = fish and supfool123 + worst hand = donkey. so fish = donkey = supfool123. the square root of that goes into a math that i cant even comprehend.
