In a lot of Razz tourneys or sit n gos. I have often seen someone who often plays like an absolute donk early. They're reraiseing on every street with high cards as if they think they're playing Stud. Some players start trying to target them and end up losing chips themselves. Obviously when they get dealt a good hand they get tons of chips. Then all of a sudden as if like a light turns on they start playing better and folding more. Are these guys lucky donks, or is this some creative effective Razz strategy?

If I'm heads up with the donkey then obviously this is a cap it to the river play.

However in the early sit and gos it a maniac with kk showing capping the bet and 3-4 other people are going for the ride. It's this scenario you want to avoid if you don't catch perfectly.

Sounds like they are just hoping to hit the jackpot and with a miracle hand. If the do this they can coat into the top 3 easy. I can't imagine this being profitable though.

Thing is this can cripple you if you get caught up in it and others are with you in the pot. If you have enough chips try and stay clear of these train wreck pots.

They're generally just lucky donks who then realise they're playing very badly. This realisation normally comes from the chat box telling them they're a retarded fish.

Sometimes they build a big stack and hope to coast into the money.

I have thought about playing like a maniac early to gain an image that will get payed off but it's just not solid strategy.

It's true that the variance you will experience getting involved with maniacs can be unsettling, but nothing is a sure bet in a tourney even if you start with the best hand every time you enter a pot. If someone is playing like they are trying to dump chips, it's your right, no responsibility to be in the pot and try to help them do this.
